About Alouette® Cheese

The distinctive flavors of Alouette® Cheese are the result of our rich culinary heritage. From our humble origins in France, we’re proud that connoisseurs and consumers alike have made us America’s #1* Brand of Premium Spreadable Cheese.

Authentic French heritage.

From rural beginnings at a small, family-owned dairy farm in Eastern France, Bongrain began producing its first specialty cheese in 1956. The product was a soft-ripened cheese named Caprice des Dieux®. After overwhelming success, the company rapidly expanded its presence in France and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s, launching new brands of innovative specialty cheeses.

Bringing the taste of France to America.

In the early 1970s, the Bongrain Group, now a world leader in specialty cheeses, recognized an opportunity in the United States for a sophisticated, premium spreadable cheese. Given its expertise in launching successful cheese varieties in Europe, Bongrain was ideally positioned to bring classic French cheeses to the U.S.

Working with a Pennsylvania-based company, Bongrain created the first Alouette® Spreadable Cheese, Garlic & Herbs, in 1974. The product was a unique blend of herbs based on a traditional French recipe and adapted for American tastes.

Introducing innovative packaging.

In the 1990s, Alouette® Spreadable Cheese underwent a packaging change to address requests for a convenient and attractive container that users could take directly from the refrigerator to their cheese platters. As a result, the widely recognized, French-style ramekin cup was introduced. This attractive container, unique to Alouette® Spreadable Cheese, is perfect for every occasion. Consumer requests for recipes and serving suggestions led to the printing on the inside of the sleeve that surrounds the ramekin cup.

Ongoing dedication to quality.

Since its inception, the Bongrain Group continues to reinforce strict standards for product quality, consistency and food safety at every level of every company, as well as from its suppliers. Innovation and listening to consumer demand remain key priorities in the Group’s new product development. As a result, consumers worldwide have grown to trust its brands. The Bongrain Group operates production facilities in 24 countries and is proud to be a world leader in specialty cheese.

The Alouette® brand has grown over the years to include a wide variety of Alouette® Spreadable Cheese flavors as well as other specialty cheese products. Today Alouette® is a leading brand in the Specialty Cheese Category in the United States and is the #1 Selling Brand of Premium Spreadable Cheese.*
